2023-11-16

Mats are something no gymnastics lesson can do without. They primarily have a safeguarding function, helping to ensure the safety of participants. Even though all gymnastics mats look similar, they are certainly not the same. So how do you choose the right gymnasium equipment? We suggest what a gymnastics mat used at school should have.

GYMNASTICS MATS FOR SCHOOL – SAFETY FIRST

It is important to remember that the school is responsible for the safety of pupils while they are on its premises. However, a particular responsibility rests on the shoulders of physical education teachers. During so-called PE lessons, it is not difficult for unwanted incidents to occur, causing more or less serious injuries. High-quality and properly chosen gymnasium equipment certainly helps to avoid them.

Mats are particularly responsible for safety during gymnastics lessons. When choosing them, it is therefore important to pay attention to the features that matter in this regard. Above all, a gymnastics mat should be non-slip. Currently, most equipment on the market has a non-slip underside. It prevents the mat from slipping even during complex exercises. In this way, many potentially dangerous situations can be averted. In some cases, a gymnastics mat with a non-slip top layer may also be advisable. This is because it makes it easier to maintain the desired position and increases grip, for example when landing or performing various exercises.

GYMNASTICS MAT – WHAT FIRMNESS AND FILLING?

The gymnastic mats available on the market differ in several characteristics. One of the most important is their firmness. It should be tailored to the type of exercise being performed. What is worth knowing about this topic?

Soft mats (T60) are most commonly used in schools and are excellent for younger users. They provide comfort and safety during the various gymnastic exercises performed in PE lessons. The standard thickness in this case is 10 cm.

Medium-firm mats labelled T90 are also known as universal mats, as they are suitable for gymnastics or rehabilitation exercises, as well as for martial arts. They are usually thinner – typically 5 cm thick.

However, when training in combat sports at a higher level, the use of firm mats marked T120 is recommended. This is because their higher density of infill provides better stability. These types of mats are also usually 5 cm thick.

Mats with a thickness of 20 cm can also prove useful during P.E. lessons. They provide act as a great safeguard during gymnastic and acrobatic exercises.

The infill material of the gymnastics mat is also very important. This is because when choosing equipment for school gymnasiums, attention should also be paid to durability. Rebound polyurethane foam is currently considered the best infill material. This is because it is highly resistant to deformation and compaction. It instantly returns to its original shape and provides very good durability and excellent cushioning.

GYMNASTICS MAT – QUALITY OF THE COVER

What should the cover of a gymnastics mat be made of? Nowadays, high-quality PVC with a synthetic leather texture is most commonly used. It is a material with very good durability, including resistance to abrasion or punctures. In addition, it is characterised by its ease of cleaning and disinfection, which is important for gymnasium equipment. Additional reinforcement at the corners increases the durability and strength of the mat, which is why it is worth paying attention to this feature. Most of the equipment available also has side handles for easy carrying.

SIZE OF A GYMNASTICS MAT

What size of a gymnastics mat to choose? The standard ones are available in a 200 x 120 cm size, which is excellent for gymnastics or rehabilitation. It is possible to choose a mattress with hook and loop tape on the sides. In this way, several pieces can be combined to create a larger soft surface. Folding (two- or three-piece) mats are also an interesting solution. They have a larger surface area and their ability to fold provides an adjustable thickness.

Slightly larger are the mats used for mounting on ladders. They have a width to match standard gymnastics ladders, while also being longer. As a result, they can provide a reliable safeguard during various exercises and competitions.
